Kuulei Newborn Pics

Today was the most stressful day.  I knew I was going to take Kuulei to get her newborn pics done this evening but at the last minute I asked the photographer if I could have Meilia in the pictures since Brady wasn't able to be here for the pictures since he was still in Oregon.  The package included the parents and newborn so I thought what a waste that Brady isn't here, what if Mei took his spot.  Well at noon I tried everything I could to have Meilia take a nap to be happy for the pictures.  Well of course the only day she does not take a nap is the day we take pics.  On the way to the studio she almost fell asleep.  I was so nervous going to the studio.  I'm always a nervous wreck when it come to taking the kids pics.  I want it to go well but I have no control.  When we got there Kuulei was sleeping so Kate carefully grabbed her out of her car seat and started taking pics.  She was so good with Kuulei and  Kuulei did so good.  She would get up and I would nurse her back to sleep then Kate would carefully take her, position her, and take more pics.  Meilia on the other hand was a pill to work with.  She would not smile or do anything we asked her to.  She just wanted to go home.  I don't blame her, we were there for like 4 hours.  We got there around 5:30pm and didn't get done until 9:30pm.  Way past Meilia's bedtime.  She was so tired and grumpy!  I was so worried the pics wouldn't come out great.  But these pictures are amazing!  No matter how hard it was that day it was well worth it.  My girls are going to cherish these pics.

Wow, can't believe she got a smile out of her!

We tried to get Meilia to lay next to Kuulei and hold her in her arms but she would not have it.  Kate even brought her husband to help and that didn't work either!

Kuulei's Birth Story

Here she is Kuulei Tiana Norton.  Born January 15th at 1:42 pm.

It all started last night.  We took Kalani to get his hair cut for the first time.  He's been begging us to cut it for a very long time.  We (rather I) deprive them from cutting there hair.  My argument is that they will just look like every other Utah kid with the famous short spiked hair.  I'm finally giving in and letting him cut his hair.  Here's some pics of before
And after.

Back to the birth story.  So I started to feel some slight contractions while we were waiting for Kalani to get his hair cut.  We like to say "that cutting Kalani's hair put me into labor.". After we cut Kalani's hair we went by to show grandma and grandpa norton who were at uncle house.  They were going to a byu basketball game.  We then went home where we were staying at grandma and grandpas house because Brady is still on rotations.  He's doing a rotation in Oregon right now doing family practice.  I told him I knew Kuulei would be coming this weekend so he flew home Friday.  So the pressure was on to have her this weekend.  When we got home Brady and the boys started putting the rocking chair together that had been sitting in a box for awhile.  Great time to finally put it together!  I got in the shower thinking I would have her that night.  Prepping myself.  We explained to the boys that they might have a new baby sister tomorrow, and that grandma and grandpa would take care of them for awhile until they could come to the hospital to see there new sister.  It was getting late my contractions were 10 to 12 minutes apart.  I was afraid to go to sleep because I go so fast.  But I was able to sleep a little.  I would wake up if I had a big contraction.  I woke up around 2 or 3 worried if I should go to the hospital because I had tested positive for strep b and I knew I needed to get an ivy with two shots of antibiotics which had to be givin in two doses three hours apart from each other so I wanted to get both doses so that baby wouldn't have to get pricked because that's what happened to Meilia.  So I called my midwife and asked her if I should go to the hospital, she told me they wouldn't start the ivy unless I was at least 4cm and my contractions were consistently 1 to 7 mins apart.  So I decided to wait a little longer.  I couldn't go back to sleep and the kids would be getting up soon so around 6:39 am Brady and I went to timpanogas hospital.  My mom met us there.  They checked me and I was only at a 3.  They said I could stay for an hour to see if I progress. So we stayed for an hour and they checked me and I only opened a little and was still at 3 but a 3 plus.  They said I could stay and walk around or I could go home but they couldn't start the ivy yet.  Or they could induce me and start the ivy.  I was bummed.  I really wanted to start the ivy because I knew if I went home I would just have to turn around and come back to the hospital because I know my body and once it gets started it doesn't stop till the baby is out.  So we went home.  I got in the shower and let the hot water run down me to sooth the contractions.  I got dressed and did my make up because I knew was going to have a photographer come and take pics of my baby being born.  I was so tired from no sleep that night I layed on the couch and listened to a hypno birthing cd.  I fell asleep I was so tired I slept through a lot of the contractions.  They were still about 9 to 11 minutes apart.  So I just fell asleep.  I woke up to some really painful contractions so I got up and tried walking up the steps.  That's when my water broke.  I yelled to Brady and he came to help me up the stairs and out the door stopping at every contraction.  Each one getting closer and more painful.  I got in the car and Brady started driving.  I was holding on through every surge, telling him to hurry.  He was driving like a maniac! I was yelling at him every time he hit a bump.  I felt nauseas, when we came to a stop light I opened the door and threw up all over the car door and on the street.  We were almost there.  At that point I was screaming and felt like I needed to push.  We drove up to the hospital where one of the nurses brought a wheel chair and wheeled me to the room.  They stripped my pants off I got on the bed and started to push.  She would not come out! It was the most longest and painful of all my births.  She would not come out.  It was like she was stuck right there and I just wanted her to come out.  The ring of fire is what they call it and I know exactly why.  My midwife came just in time to catch her.  After probably 5 to 7 pushes she finally came out.  Come to find out, she came out breeched that's why it took so long and hard for her to come out.

She was here and I was so glad
